Why Having a Separate Blog for Your Podcast Makes Sense

A friend of mine, Bill Sweetman, just launched his new podcast called Marketing Martini. The tagline is Internet Marketing Advice Served Straight Up. Love it!

It’s short, sweet and to the point. Perfect for our limited attention spans. I took a quick look at his podcast before it went live and offered my feedback. I have to say that his podpage looks better than mine.

One of the women I hailed as a 2006 Savvy Female Podcaster, Colette Vogele, has finally launched her own podcast called Rules for the Revolution. It’s a look at the legal issues around user generated content.

I’ve been telling people to use their existing blog to publish their podcasts, just create a separate category. In WordPress, this is easy to do. Typepad has made this simpler as well, so I can now recommend Typepad as an adequate podcasting publishing tool. However, this has presented a few problems.

  1. Your podcast gets buried in your posts.
  2. You have too many buttons and chicklets in the navigation of your blog to satisfy both the needs of your blog and your podcast.
  3. Often, people aren’t savvy enough to click on your podcast category to listen to your podcast.

Having a separate blog for your podcast makes more sense. That way, people aren’t confused searching around your existing blog for your podcast. I got an email the other day from someone stating that they couldn’t subscribe to my podcast feed. When I looked at my blog, I could see why. My podcast was buried deep and it took several clicks to find it.

So, if you’re thinking about publishing a podcast, launch it using a separate blog. It makes way more sense to do it this way.

Thanks for the mention Leesa! The reasons you provide for the separate blog make perfect sense to me. Since my blog is hosted by the Center for Internet & Society, I wanted a separate blog as well for the podcast so I could have a little more editorial control over the look/feel etc. I’m enjoying wordpress too. It’s really quite easy to run.

Hi Leesa, thanks for mentioning my Internet marketing podcast. And thanks for your help with launching it.

One of the many reasons to have a standalone blog for your podcast is it helps with your organic search engine results. That alone makes it worth the effort, in my humble opinion.

P.S. Congrats on your book deal!
