While I Consume Less Traditional Media, I Have My Favourites

Paul Colligan and his family has committed to getting their entertainment on the Internet only. He’s allowing us to follow his pursuits through his blog called Year Of Living Digitally.

I applaud their efforts. Kind of similar to what the dotcomguy did back in 1999(?) when he holed himself up in an apartment for a year and bought everything he needed from the Internet.

While both my radio and TV consumption have severely decreased every year since 1994 due in large part to the Internet, I do indulge in old media entertainment every once in a while.

I still listen to radio daily, although it’s one station – 680News. Although it’s an all news format, it’s the only radio I listen to at least 2, 3, 4-times a day. Because I adore Leslie Roberts, the 6pm anchor on Global Television, I may just tune into his new morning show on CFRB 1010.

As for TV, I have a few favourites that I can never miss. Prison Break, all the CSIs, Heros and of course, Battlestar Galactica. In fact, I watch 3-hours of TV in 1 sitting with Prison Break on at 8pm, Heros on at 9pm and CSI Miami on at 10pm. Leaves me nauseated at best, but I only do this once a week.

As for Canadian TV, I watch even less, but the ones I do watch regularly are the ones that don’t follow an American template. Whenever I want to watch something wacky, weird, or in essence, Canadian to the bone, I tune in to the following programs:

Has podcasting killed your TV viewing habits? If not, what are the shows you can’t miss on TV or radio?

Update: Little Mosque on the Prairie drew 2.1-million viewers for CBC. See what a little buzz can do? But in typical CBC fashion, they’re moving the show to another day and time. CBC does this crap all the time. They air a show for a few weeks in one timeslot, then move it, thus losing some of its viewers. Then these Canadian broadcasters wonder why they see a slump in viewers, which then prompts them to cancel a really good show after only a few episodes.

I noticed just today that as I listened to a CBC show on my car radio, I wanted to REWIND because I missed something. Geez, you can’t do that. (Yes, the CBC does have podcasts, I know!)

I have never been a big TV watcher, but I do like House, Prison Break and Desperate Housewives. If I remember, I watch the Rick Mercer Report. I love him.

As for radio, it’s CBC all the way, except for traffic and weather on 680 News.

My digital time has definitely cut into my TV viewing and radio listening.

    Here’s what I still follow:

    TV, can’t-miss: Lost
TV, usually: Grey’s Anatomy (not as good as it used to be)
TV, once every week or two: FSN Sports Tonight
TV, sports: most Patriots games on Sundays and Red Sox during the warmer months
TV, never: local news programs (except when Leesa sends me a link to her appearances)

Radio: Boston Top-40 station “Kiss 108” when I’m driving with my daughter; Sportsradio 850 WEEI when I’m driving on my own; NPR on occasion.

    (on more category)
Newspaper: Still subscribe to the print edition of the Boston Globe each day, though I’m seriously considering giving that up, too, and just keeping the extra-large Sunday edition.

Now if you had asked for my podcast or blogs list, this post would be much, much longer!
