Toronto Technology Week is Coming May 28th to June 1st

Wow, the week of May 28th is going to be an exciting time in the city of Toronto. The Canadian New Media Awards – considered the Oscars of well…new media – will take place on May 27, 2007 (btw, they’re looking for nominees, so if you know of a Canadian making waves in the new media space, fill out the form, but beware of the submission fee).

Then a few days later on May 30th, Mesh starts. I missed this conference last year, but I’m certain not to miss this year, no matter what it takes. Also, there looks like a BarCamp will be organized during this week.

These events and more are happening during Toronto Technology Week (TTW) and according to my friend (and Chair) Dave Forde, TTW is:

“A series of activities will be undertaken to showcase the depth and breath of
Toronto’s high technology sector.”

So, if you’re in Toronto and want to add an event to the TTW roster, you can read more details here, then add your event to the Upcoming calendar here.

So take the time and make sure more nominations are submitted by others than the big corporations. If you don’t get involved you can’t win. And as for the nomination fee, we’re not-for-profit and all fees goes to helping support the CNMA.

Agreed. When I look in iTunes and go to the podcasting category, most of the podcasts listed on the front page are from big name corporations. It seems like the independent voice is being ignored, even though we were the ones to bring podcasting to the mainstream.

Don’t get me wrong – having these big names in our industry only helps to push it forward. However, they’re not the ones who went through the growing pains to make podcasting work – we were. Somehow, that’s being forgotten.

Wow, I just had a look at the CNMA web site and I’m appalled. Aside from the entrance fee, I’m disappointed that they consider old media on the internet as being “new media”. New media is supposed to be something more; it’s supposed to be citizen’s media. The web site is just old media trying to use a catchy term… regular citizen’s journalists wouldn’t dish out money just to be nominated for an award. This is ridiculous.
