This quote came to me after my coach challenged me in a coaching session. When I told him that one of my core values is freedom, he said:
No, it’s bondage.”
I was stumped…
How could that be? So, my coach spent the rest of that coaching session showing me all the ways my business was keeping me in bondage.
I have since been able to free myself of the chains that kept me enslaved as a business owner by working with a coach…
And due to my own journey, I can see clearly how Black women use their businesses to unwittingly keep themselves in bondage.
For example:
- They speak for free at events, while the event planner gets paid through registrations, product sales, and sponsorships. And you still get nothing. Not even leads because they turned out to be sour.
- They fail to collect outstanding invoices from clients, vendors, and/or suppliers because they’re afraid of coming across like a b****.
- As business owners, Black women follow a blueprint that violates their integrity and doesn’t align with their personality. Yet, they won’t drop out because they don’t want to seem like a failure.
- They enrol in mastermind programs where they end up “helping” other members to the point where her needs as a Black female business owner are not being met.
- They hide their gifts from the world because they feel like an outsider, or were criticized, or were told they’re “too much.”
And on and on I could go.
It’s time to breathe!
It’s time to stop suffocating in the “o” zone – overgiving, overcommitting, overachieving, overresponsible, overcaring.
If you could stand powerfully, what shackles would you finally release in your business?
In other words, if you could use innovation in your business as a tool to provide you with FREEDOM, what would that look like for you?
