Going Back in Time with Archive.org

There was an article that I wanted to read and unfortunately, the site that it was on is no longer up. As I consumed some more holiday treats, I remembered archive.org. There, I was able to input the URL and voila! The article popped up.

I ended up becoming quite nostalgic and did a search on some of the web properties I used to operate.

Just in case your curiosity is getting the better of you, here they are:

http://www.sportsfemmes.com – This online magazine that I owned profiled the best Canadian female amateur athletes. This is where I honed my interviewing skills as I attended way too many hockey and tennis games and competed with seasoned journalists from the Globe & Mail, Toronto Star and Toronto Sun in scrums looking for that scoop.

I started my first blog because of SportsFemmes, although Archive.org shows that my earliest post was in 2001 (it should be 2000). I appeared on TSN Off the Record back in 1999 and was almost hired by Canoe.ca back in 2000 to write for their online sports section, but then the heads started to roll through layoffs (due in huge part to the dot com bust). I also made a killing in ad sales, netting almost $2500 a month just in CPMs. Those were the golden days of Web 1.0.

http://www.blackvenus.net – I launched this website right after I didn’t finish my last year of my Master’s program in History at the University of Toronto. For my thesis, I was going to explore the intersection of race, religion, sex and the women’s movement in late 19th-century Ontario.

After my scholarship ran out, I didn’t see the point of pursuing a Master’s degree in History, especially after getting hired on at an Internet security firm at $36,000 a year at 24-years old. So I launched the website instead. Take note of the different designs over the 3-years it was up. Couldn’t make up my mind, I guess.

And just in case you’re wondering, no, I don’t dabble in that industry anymore because I’ve been delivered. Threw out about $5000 worth of inventory, let the domain go and cut all ties in that industry because….well….long story. Buy me a steak dinner when I’m in your neck of the woods (check my schedule) and maybe I’ll share the details with you.

http://www.evesgarden.ca – A website I co-managed for about 6-months after taking the reigns from another gal. EvesGarden was all about women’s health and I was bored to death by the subject matter. I only took it over because of the ad revenue (yes, it was all about the money, can’t lie).

If you go to the News & Reviews section, you’ll see that Blogger was the blog tool of choice back in 2001. You can see why falling into the arms of WordPress made me think I was cheating on Blogger since I had been in Blogger’s company for over 5-years.

Can’t think of any others, but I’d sure like to find out what some of you were doing back in the days that can still be found on archive.org. Do share.
