I’m a believer in creating a snappy, pithy and brief introduction when someone asks what your podcast is about. I call this your Unique Podcast Message (UPM) and I provide a formula on how to craft one in Podcasting for Profit.
In essence, your UPM is about your audience, not you. Most podcasters make the mistake of focusing on themselves when describing their podcast, however, your focus should be on getting more people to consume your podcast. A secret to gaining a ton of listeners or viewers is to describe your podcast in 10-words or less with an emphasis on describing the problem your podcast solves.
I found a few that I really, really like. Can you see why these UPMs are so compelling?
- Podcasted Technology Tips for Busy People – One Minute Tip
- Internet Marketing Advice Served Straight Up – Marketing Martini
- Bringing You the Word of God in Concise Messages – The Word Podcast
- Helping Women Manage a Business on a Shoestring Budget – Cubicle Divas
Here are a few UPMs that are weak. Can you tell why (names withheld to protect the guilty)?
- A Show About Life
- Life on the Low End of the Spectrum
- If You Got a Problem, He’ll Solve It
- It Can’t Hurt to Listen (nope, I’m not making this one up)
- This Podcast Was Created Using Talkshoe
- Music and General Chat
- Advice, Tips & Resources for Freelancers
- Darkness for Your Soul
- Give It a Listen!
How can you refine your UPM so you attract the very people you want to consume your show?
